Frequently Asked Questions

Deciding what to do with a loved one’s ashes is deeply personal, and questions are natural. Here are answers to common questions about cremation stones, their creation, and what to expect. The Sacred Stones team is also happy to assist with any additional questions.

Why Choose Cremation Stones?

Stones have long symbolized strength, permanence, and connection to the earth. For many families, cremation stones provide a meaningful way to remain close to someone they love.

Memorial stones offer a tangible way to remember a loved one. They can be held, shared among family members, or placed in meaningful locations such as gardens, homes, or favorite places. This approach creates a comforting alternative to traditional urns or scattering ashes.

Why Not Scatter Ashes or Keep Them in an Urn?

Many families scatter ashes or keep them in an urn, but cremation stones offer another meaningful option. Cremated remains contain high levels of salts and alkaline compounds that can negatively impact plants and soil if scattered directly in nature. Transforming ashes into stones removes these components, creating a memorial that can safely be placed outdoors if desired. In addition, some families prefer a memorial that can be touched, held, or shared rather than stored in a single container.

How Long Does the Process Take?

The typical timeline for creating cremation stones is about 4–5 weeks from the time the cremated remains arrive at the Sacred Stones workshop. This allows time for careful preparation, stone formation, finishing, and packaging before the stones are returned to the family.

How Do I Send Ashes to Sacred Stones?

Cremated remains must be shipped through USPS Priority Express, which is currently the only legal shipping method for transporting ashes in the United States. Once you place your order, Sacred Stones will send a package containing shipping materials and instructions. These materials typically arrive within 5–10 business days. After your loved one's ashes are sent, the team will keep you updated on the status of the shipment and the progress of your stones.

Are Cremation Stones Environmentally Friendly?

Yes. Before the stones are formed, the cremated remains are carefully processed to remove excess salts and alkaline components. This helps ensure the stones are safe for placement in natural environments. Each stone is finished with a protective shellac coating that helps protect the surface while avoiding plastics or harmful chemical coatings.

How Long Do the Stones Last?

Cremation stones can last indefinitely when kept indoors. When placed outdoors, they will gradually wear down over time due to natural exposure to weather and environmental conditions.

The stones are water-resistant but not completely waterproof, as they use a natural shellac coating rather than synthetic plastics.

Do I Have to Place My Order Online?

No. While many families choose to order through the website, Sacred Stones also accepts orders by phone or other arrangements.

Payments can be processed over the phone, through email invoices, or by check if that is more comfortable for you. The team aims to remain flexible and supportive during what can be a difficult time.

What Size and Color Are the Cremation Stones?

Each memorial stone is typically about 2–4 inches wide, making them comfortable to hold in the hand. Because every stone is individually crafted, the shapes and sizes vary slightly. Each one is modeled after natural stones found in nature, so every collection is unique. Most stones appear in tones ranging from white to tan, though subtle color variations may occur depending on the natural pigments within the cremated remains.
